8 Jul 2009 | Ashford 'shared space' scheme steals the show

The Ashford ‘shared space’ scheme, in which Grontmij | Whitelaw Turkington has played an integral role, was recently featured on BBC 1’s One Show in the UK.

The initiative has transformed selected areas of Ashford town centre in Kent and helped pave the way for future growth. As lead designer on the scheme, Grontmij | Whitelaw Turkington has combined art, engineering and the environment to create an attractive public realm that is inclusive of both pedestrians and road users.

Multi-award winning initiative
To date, the initiative has picked up three prestigious awards, most recently in the ‘Highway’ category of the Street Design Awards.

Commenting on the latest coverage, Lindsey Whitelaw, Managing Director of Grontmij | Whitelaw Turkington said, “This is yet a further boost to the credibility of what is a unique project. We are delighted to have played a central role in creating a distinctive public realm, which should help contribute to the future prosperity of the town.”
