18 Oct 2007 | Excellent CAT3 score caps outstanding year

Leading engineering consultancy Grontmij has been awarded a high score of 174.5 in the Highways Agency’s CAT3 (Capability Assessment Tool) Assessment. This success completes an outstanding year for Grontmij in the UK.

Introduced by the Highways Agency in 2002, the CAT assessment guarantees the consistency, transparency and robustness of their tender selection, resulting in the improved effectiveness of all their suppliers.

The assessors were particularly impressed with Grontmij’s 'strong and distinctive' culture, the change management mechanisms in place and the ‘marriage of cultures’ since last year’s acquisition.

Lawrence Hughes, managing director - Grontmij UK & Ireland, comments: "We are delighted to have received such a high score in our recent CAT3 assessment, and this just proves the dedication and commitment shown by all our employees.
A high CAT score underlines our capability and ranks us amongst our peer group at the top end of the Highways Agency supply chain. It ensures that we receive due consideration as befits our position as one of the UK’s leading engineering consultancies both with the Highways Agency and also with potential partners in joint ventures and consortia.
Becoming part of a global organisation has enabled us to develop revolutionary new techniques for our customers’ benefits. We are dedicated to building on this development process and will continue to invest in new ideas and people in order to develop the culture that has been recognised by the CAT3 indicators."

The Highways Agency uses the results of CAT assessments, as well as past performance, to select the most likely suppliers to deliver the best value solutions and services for each project.

The assessment measures the approach and potential effectiveness of companies, using a range of 24 performance indicators, with companies scoring a maximum of 12 in each area. The indicators cover a range of business skills, including recruitment and people development; strategy development, implementation and review; communications; diversity; customer relationships and requirements and corporate social responsibility.

In the last 12 months, Grontmij has been involved in designing and supervising Dublin's tunnel, the M6 / River Esk bridge crossing near Carlisle and the M9 spur extension in Edinburgh, as well as upgrading the UK's last single track trunk road, the A830 from Arisaig to Loch nan Uamh, to a two-lane carriageway.

Grontmij provides a complete multi-disciplinary engineering and process technology service, plus a comprehensive range of business planning and management solutions, and environmental expertise.

Employing more than 1000 people in the UK and Ireland, Grontmij has offices in Leeds, Solihull, Bristol, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Peterborough, Reading, Wrexham and Warrington.
