From 13 entries, a jury selected a shortlist of 6 projects, including Grontmij’s sustainable office building in Mechelen. The Grontmij entry will be on show at the exhibition that forms part of the Project Build trade fair to be held in Brussels Expo on 22 and 23 September. We will be explaining the highlights of the entry at the trade fair, on 22 September. It will then be up to both a technical jury and a press jury to select their winner. The eventual winner will be chosen by the public.
Until 22 September, anyone can cast their vote for the Grontmij head office by visiting the website www.2020challenge.be. The online votes will be added to the voting forms handed in at the Project Build trade fair, where visitors to the exhibition can also make their choice known.
About the project
The new Grontmij head office building is one of the most sustainable renovation projects in Flanders, achieving E level 0 and K level 17. The renovation project involves the 50 year-old government-owned building that belonged to the former RTT telecommunications service. By opting for renovation as opposed to new build, we have saved more than 2,500 m³ of concrete, 16.5 tonnes of steel and a staggering 1,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Grontmij was delighted to take up the challenge of developing an ambitious plan at this AAA location, opposite the railway station in Mechelen. The aim of this eco-office is to make a conscious contribution to the development of the station district.
About the competition
For the 2020Challenge, of which this is the second edition, trade fair organisers easyFairs joined forces with the engineering organisations ORI, KVIV, FABI and Editorial firm Palindroom. The aim of the competition is to draw attention to innovative and sustainable solutions by Belgian consultancy and study firms.
