The establishment of a railbridge of 18.6 km between Denmark and Germany across the Fehmarn Belt, will require an upgrade of the Danish land plants to Rødbyhavn. The Public Transport Authority is responsible for the initial project work concerning the various plants – such as for instance the electrification and doubling of the track from Ringsted to a place near Rødbyhavn; and, also, the Kastrup Station (Copenhagen Airport) capacity will require improvement.
Grontmij in Denmark as developer's consultanty for Danish Public Transport Authority
The Danish Public Transport Authority has appointed Grontmij in Denmark as developer's consultant, and – together with two sub-consultants, Møller & Grønborg, architects & planners, and Swedish Vectura Consulting – the company will be part of the Public Transport Authority's organisation untill 2012.
”The project which Grontmij has become a part of is a comprehensive and extremely exciting one. In close cooperation with the client and subconsultants, our broadly composed project team will be required to upgrade the railway section to Rødbyhavn – where the Fehmarn-Belt bridge takes its point of departure. An upgrade of the land plants will mean a series of benefits; for example passengers on Sealand will come to experience considerably reduced travel times on the Copenhagen-Hamburg section. Moreover, this upgrade will also entail availability of free traffic-related capacity across the Great Belt and, hence, leave room for more non-stop passenger trains", states Grontmij Department Head, Erik Haldbæk.
Erik Haldbæk further emphasises that the forthcoming environmental-hearing processes will constitute a central and challenging element of the project. At an early stage, the citizens will have the opportunity to put forward desires and potential concerns; and, later on, the project organisation will be responsible for reconciling this input with political requirements.
Multi-disciplinary assignment
Arne Buhl Petersen, Grontmij in Denmark Business Unit Director, is looking forward to this multi-disciplinary assignment:
”I am very satisfied that this project offers an opportunity to further develop the knowledge we gained in connection with the recent years' work on the Copenhagen-Ringsted project and thus it will contribute to a further strengthening of our competencies within the railway field. Also, we are very pleased that, once again, an important Danish project offers us an opportunity to contribute with our capacity for multidisciplinary work and for bringing a diversity of competences in play.”
