25 Oct 2010 | Grontmij and Witteveen+Bos team up on major Haak om Leeuwarden project

After winning the tender, the combination Grontmij - Witteveen+Bos has been commissioned by the Province of Friesland to prepare, set up, subcontract and supervise the realisation of state motorway 31 connecting North and Central Leeuwarden with the Westelijke Invalsweg [western approach road] in Leeuwarden. In other words, the northern section of the Haak om Leeuwarden [Hook around Leeuwarden], including two approach roads.

The new connection serves to improve the flow of traffic in and around Leeuwarden. The new infrastructure will come into use in late 2014. The combined total operation amounts to 3.7 million euros.

The combination covers six (UAV-GC) contracts totalling approximately five motorway kilometres (to be built and reconstructed), two aqueduct bridges, thirteen dry engineering structures, including five ‘rail’ engineering structures.

Both parties have extensive knowledge of and experience with such multi-disciplinary projects. A project team comprising experts from the two firms has been assembled to conduct the operations. ‘Together, we have ample expertise and regional knowledge to meet the requirements. Combined with good experiences working together on previous projects, this integral project will culminate successfully,’ explains project manager Willem de Jonge.
