The skate-park constitutes a part of the large renewal project for the Fælledparken, which will take three to four years. The skate-park will comprise up to 4500-square metres in total when finished and will be opened this autumn.
Besides its size, the new skate-park is also unique as professional skaters of international renown – such as Steve Berra, Eric Koston and Danish Rune Glifbjerg, the future users from the skating, BMXing and roller-skating communities - have been involved in the design of the new park. The cooperation has ensured that, as to form and function, the new park will be complying with the most novel trends within the skater culture. For instance, the focus has been on reaching the highest standards through the establishment of a smooth and even concrete surface which will create particularly optimal conditions for the skaters.
Grontmij engineer, Susanne Unn Weihe, who is responsible for the total consulting services of this assignment for the City of Copenhagen: “Many municipalities could benefit from drawing inspiration from this project. For cities characterised by groups of rootless young people lacking alternatives to the more common exercise options such as football, badminton or swimming, this would be an obvious strategy to follow.”
“Constituting part of Fælledparken’s active urban space, the skate-park is intended to encourage young people to participate in physical activity. At the same time, it will be a meeting place contributing to provide a stable social framework for young people meeting their friends. It will enhance both the health and quality of life for the young people, whilst at the same time having a preventive effect in relation to crime,” Susanne Unn Weihe states.
