SHARON (Stable High rate Ammonia Removal Over Nitrite) is a method developed and patented by Grontmij which has reached international success as a more efficient and environmentally friendly way to remove nitrogen from wastewater.

Most of Linköping city’s waste water goes to the waste water treatment plant of Nykvarn. There they purify nearly 16 million cubic meters of wastewater every year. Sewage sludge is separated in the purification process, which is digested to become biogas. SHARON is used to remove nitrogen compounds in the residual sludge water.
International success
SHARON was originally developed by Grontmij in the Netherlands, where since the 1990s there are extremely high demands on the purification of waste water that reaches the Dutch coastline. The method has since been used internationally, including in the UK and the U.S., where the biggest holding right now is being built in New York. Since the method is more efficient than similar processes significant energy savings of up to 25 percent can be achieved.
