8 Sep 2009 | Grontmij in Sweden to design expansion of the Värta Pier in Stockholm

Stockholms Hamnar (Ports of Stockholm) is developing a new port for Stockholm in the Värtahamnen and Frihamnen harbours, which will include a comprehensive expansion of the Värta Pier. Grontmij is responsible for the planning and design of the Värta Pier in six different technical areas. The assignment is worth around EUR 3,4 million and runs until 2014.

“Expertise and pricing were crucial when we were assessing tenders. Grontmij won the assignment based on the company’s total expertise and its competitive offer within the framework of a full commitment,” comments Per Ling-Vannerus, Project Manager at Stockholms Hamnar (Ports of Stockholm).

Värtahamnen harbour will be expanded to modernise and streamline harbour activities. At the same time, attractive land will be freed up to allow continued urban development next to the harbour area. This investment to combine and develop new urban buildings is unique. The actual pier expansion itself is advanced, and the overall complexity is increased, as many construction projects will take place simultaneously in the area.

Grontmij’s task relates to design documents and the production of planning and construction documents required for the land-based facilities, their infrastructure and building service systems. In total, six technical areas are covered: foundations, structural engineering, infrastructure and building service systems, as well as water and sanitation and building automation systems. In total, the assignment will engage around 50 consultants from Grontmij and has an order value of around EUR 3,4 million.

“As we are taking complete responsibility, we can create, in close cooperation with the customer, an effective work organisation for all parties to the project based on a shared view of the goals. This is precisely the strength offered by Grontmij and which experience has shown as both a prerequisite and a success factor in projects of this scope. Our organisation is very experienced in working together and between expertises, which lead to synergies that create significant cost benefits in the project,” says Johan Axelsson, Divisional Manager at Grontmij Project Management in Sweden.
