The station is to be erected in Emlichheim (Northern Germany). Because of its innovative character the project is financially supported by the federal government. It will be for the first time in Germany that the biomass potential of straw will be used in such large dimensions. The straw needed for the supply of the plant – which is up to 75,000 tons a year – stems from regional grain farming. Supply contracts for more than 93% of the requested amount of straw have been concluded with local farmers.
Ina Brandes, Managing Director Grontmij Germany: ‘I am very proud that Grontmij is part of this unique project which also clearly underlines the strong position of Grontmij’s business line Water & Energy in the dynamic field of bioenergy in Germany.’
The power plant is a climate-friendly solution. It will help to avoid almost 90,000 tons of CO2 equivalents per year. The input-output ratio of primary energy used in the power plant will reach 90%. An adjacent starch factory will use both the process heat and the high-temperature steam. The power plant will deliver a thermal input of 49.8 MW. A local heating network will provide the municipality of Emlichheim with eco- and climate-friendly heat. In addition there will be a supply of approx. 9 MW into the public power supply system.
