11 Aug 2011 | Grontmij wins € 10 million contract for major infrastructure project in Stockholm (Sweden)

• One of the largest infrastructural projects in Sweden in decades
• One of the longest road tunnels in the world

Grontmij has been appointed to what is known to be one of the largest infrastructural projects in Sweden in decades: the Stockholm bypass which will link the northern and southern part of the region. The fee for Grontmij is approximately € 10 million (SEK 100 million) for the period until end 2013. The total construction costs of the bypass amounts to € 3.0 billion (SEK 27.6 billion).

Grontmij has been commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration to carry out project planning for the traffic junction Kungens Kurva, which entails preparing construction documents for three traffic interchanges as part of the Stockholm Bypass Project. The work will begin with planning and analysis phases and the major design work will begin in 2012.

Sylvo Thijsen, CEO Grontmij N.V.: ‘I am very proud that the Swedish Transport Administration has chosen Grontmij to participate in this landmark project for Sweden, which is both a recognition for our extensive knowledge as well as our expertise in complex infrastructural projects’.

About the Stockholm Bypass
The Stockholm Bypass Project is one of Sweden’s largest infrastructure projects, linking the northern and southern parts of the region, resulting in a new route for the European highway (E4) past Stockholm. The aim is to take of the pressure off the so-called Essingeleden route, which is currently the only major road through and past Stockholm and the city centre. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2012 and the construction time will be 8 to 10 years.

One of the longest road tunnels in the world
Over 18 of the 21 kilometres of road goes through a tunnel so as to reduce the impact on the sensitive natural and cultural environments. When the link opens for traffic it will be one of the longest road tunnels in the world.
