Grontmij in Germany wins engineering contest for the new construction of the Schiersteiner bridge over the Rhine
Grontmij in Germany has won the engineering contest for the new construction of the Schiersteiner Rheinbrücke on the heavily frequented motorway A 643 between the two state capitals Mainz and Wiesbaden.
The new Schiersteiner bridge will replace the old one that is no longer sufficient for the growing traffic load. It is one of the longest road bridges in Western Germany (1280m).
According to the jury Grontmij’s design (in a consortium with architect Ferdinand Heide) has not only been chosen for aesthetic reasons, but also because it offers the best economic and ecologic solutions.
Special conditions
The flood plain area that is affected by the construction is environmentally highly sensitive and part of a nature protection area, a bird sanctuary and protected under the Flora-Fauna-Habitat Directive. Grontmij had the best ideas to cope with these special conditions and hereby strengthens its position as one of the important traffic engineering companies in Germany.
