2 Mar 2009 | Grontmij UK & Ireland bucks recession with two major project wins

Grontmij, in the UK and Ireland, has been awarded two significant contracts in the transportation sector.

M80, Scotland
The first will see Grontmij drawing on its extensive highways experience to deliver the detailed design to bring the A80 in Glasgow up to motorway standard.

The project will see ten kilometres of online widening and eight kilometres of offline new motorway between Stepps and Haggs. The scheme is currently being designed by 65 professionals working from Grontmij’s Glasgow and Edinburgh offices. Road construction will begin immediately and the motorway will be fully opened in 2011.

Grontmij is the lead designer on the project for Highways Management (Scotland) Ltd.; a consortium of Bilfinger Berger / Graham Construction and Farran’s Construction. The scheme is a Transport Scotland Commission to build and maintain the motorway under a 30 year concession agreement.

The project, which has a construction value of approximately £260 million, will complete the strategic road network between the M73, the M80 and M876. This includes the Mollinsburn Interchange upgrade with the M73, which is a well-known bottleneck for commuter traffic into Glasgow. The upgrade will ease congestion in the area, ensuring smoother flow and quality road surface for the high volume of traffic.

N2, Republic of Ireland
Grontmij has also been awarded the N2 Clontibret to Northern Ireland border scheme by Monaghan County Council and the National Roads Authority.

Grontmij will progress this scheme through the route selection, preliminary design and statutory procedures stages over the next four years. The consultancy will also be responsible for managing the project.

The commission is of strategic importance to Ireland’s transport infrastructure as it links Dublin and the M1 in the South with the 88km of the A5 in Northern Ireland between Derry and the border, which is currently under improvement. Grontmij will be responsible for the route selection, preliminary design and statutory procedures stages.

The project will be led by Grontmij’s Dublin office and will draw on multidisciplinary expertise from across the business. This includes professionals from the highways, traffic and economics, structures, geotechnical and environmental disciplines.

Continued Success
Lawrence Hughes, Grontmij’s managing director, UK and Ireland said: “Our continued success in 2009 is testament to the quality of service we provide to our range of UK and Irish clients."

“The variety and depth of our services portfolio separates us from the competition and enables us to deliver value across a broad spectrum of project requirements. We’re delighted that our talents are being utilised in such significant schemes right across the UK and Ireland.”
