Grontmij and contractor HOMIJ commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat for large assignment
HOMIJ Technische Installaties bv was recently commissioned by the Directorate General for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat) to renovate the Haringvliet and Volkerak lock complexes.
The existing operating and management systems at both locks as well as the energy distribution systems and components of the mechanical engineering installations are to be replaced. In this way, the required reliability and availability of the complexes will be guaranteed. The work will commence in 2007 and continue through to the end of 2010.
Support from Grontmij
Grontmij will support HOMIJ with a team of some 15 people. Grontmij is responsible for drawing up the preliminary design and the final design. This will be done completely in accordance with the principles of Systems Engineering and Life Cycle Management.
In addition, Grontmij has an important role to play in managing the external communications climate in terms of stakeholders and all other interested parties and in obtaining all necessary permits. Grontmij’s tasks also include drawing up the calculations to demonstrate the required reliability and availability and to provide support during the realisation process.
Innovative tendering
The commissioning of the work was preceded by an innovative tendering procedure based on competition-oriented dialogue. HOMIJ drew up the tender design together with its partners ABB, Grontmij, Hycom and Hollestelle.
Lock complexes
The Haringvliet lock complex comprises, among other things, a primary floodwater barrier that guarantees the safety of the hinterland. The Volkerak lock complex is a commercial shipping lock situated on one of the busiest sailing routes in Europe.
