19 Feb 2008 | Grontmij keeps construction work in Nykvarn Municipality (Sweden) on track

The rails have been laid, the road is asphalted and two bridges have been completed. In February the first trainload of spare parts will be going to the Volkswagen warehouse in the new Mörby industrial area in Nykvarn Municipality in Sweden.

The construction project, which was completed in record time, represents an investment of over MSEK 100 (EUR 10.743.446,-). Grontmij has been responsible for project management and advice on construction (the assignment for Grontmij is circa EUR 0,5 million).

Nykvarn, with its approx. 8,000 inhabitants, is a small but strategically located municipality just to the southwest of Södertälje. Thanks to its proximity to important communications routes such as the E20 highway and the Svealand line, with its express trains to Stockholm, Mörby industrial area is particularly well suited to companies specialising in logistics. All of these are important factors behind Swedish Volkswagen’s decision to transfer its spare-parts warehouse to the site, which was ready to occupy in April 2007.

Record time
What is unique to Mörby is the fact that the connections from the industrial area to the surrounding infrastructure largely took place after completion of the Volkswagen warehouse. This includes road and pipeline work plus an industrial track to the Svealand line, which also required construction of a bridge over the railway at the 509 road.
At the same time the area was connected to other important infrastructure such as electricity, water and drainage. Everything was completed in 17 months – a record time for construction projects of this scope.

Reduction of costs
The tight schedule has considerably reduced the cost of the project, whilst at the same time intelligent building solutions involving recycled rails have saved further money and have protected the environment. It is thus estimated that the project costs for the customer are 10 15% below budget.

”Mörby is now ready for the establishment of more companies, and is an important part of the municipality’s commercial programme. In the project management of the construction work Grontmij has efficiently managed temporal and logistical challenges, and has furthermore contributed expertise and reduced the costs,” says Urban Dahlberg, Nykvarn Municipality’s Head of Town Planning.

On the 19th of February the first train will be arriving from Germany with spare parts for the Volkswagen warehouse, and will be inaugurating the industrial track. This will be celebrated with invited representatives from the municipality, Volkswagen, Grontmij and the media.
