On 13 January 2009, the international conference “Water management and the implementation of the WFD in Romania” took place in Bucharest, Romania. It was organised by Grontmij, together with three consortium partners. The results of two Romanian projects, carried out by Grontmij and its partners, took centre stage this day.

It was organised by Grontmij, together with three consortium partners. The results of two Romanian projects, carried out by Grontmij and its partners, took centre stage this day.

The Romanian Minister of the Environment, Mr Nimirschi, and the Dutch ambassador to Romania, Mr Werner, opened the conference. Representatives of the Romanian water boards, the Ministry of the Environment, the Netherlands Foreign Trade Agency, the Dutch embassy and various Romanian organisations had all been invited. Some 50 people attended.

Highlights

  • Groundwater project: All EU member states are required to determine their so-called threshold values for groundwater. The extent of groundwater pollution is determined on the basis of these values. This successful project has resulted in a system for Romania, a manual for this system and a training for the people working with this system. Another important result of this project is a set of measures for landfills. Another important result of this project is a set of measures for landfills. Romania is required to take measures to ensure that its landfills comply with European regulations. Along with various other parties, Grontmij drew up a list of possible measures. These measures were implemented at two pilot landfills in western Romania. The system was then applied to generate an overview of the costs of the various measures, as well as their expected results and therefore to determine which measures would be the most efficient to implement.

  • Surface water project: This project aims at drawing up environmental targets and a set of measures for two Romanian areas (a mining area and an endangered area). In the course of the project, professionals were trained to organise, among other things, stakeholder involvement and public participation.

And now?
The possible extent of involvement in the follow-up stage of both projects is currently being investigated. We think the odds are very much in our favour: a number of our proposals for new water-related projects are currently under consideration, and we have by now made many excellent contacts with various prominent organisations.

To be continued!
