Grontmij will deliver feasibility studies and cost-benefit analyses. It will support the Afghan authorities in the choice of suitable projects and advise them on time frames, target groups and technical implementation – always considering local culture, administration, and politics. Monitoring and evaluation will assure a professional outcome.
Grontmij Germany has been successfully involved in several projects in Afghanistan in the last years and the project thus will benefit from Grontmij´s experience with local staff and local authorities.
In each of the provinces Kunduz, Badakshan, Baghlan, Balkh, and Takhar Grontmij assists local teams who will be responsible for the construction of roads and bridges, for flood protection measures, aquifers, water and power supply.
Sylvo Thijsen, CEO Grontmij N.V., says: ‘This is a special project as we all know that a well-working infrastructure is urgently needed in these regions. We are therefore highly motivated to support the Afghan people in establishing future-oriented measures. This project is also a further testament of the success of our new organisation structure, whereby we focus on leveraging knowledge and expertise from our local markets, to ensure cross border usage.’
The project is financed by the Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) which was called into existence by the German and the Afghan Government. Its aim is not only to improve local infrastructure, but also to implement knowledge in the region which makes the efforts sustainable.
