Yorkshire Water manages the collection, treatment and distribution of water in the Yorkshire district, supplying around 1.24 billion litres of drinking water. The 750-acre Esholt is one of Yorkshire’s most important and largest site serving around 750,000 customers in the Leeds and Bradford areas. The Thermal Hydrolysis Plant is the first for Yorkshire Water. The project is part of the AMP5 Large Projects framework programme.
The assignment of Grontmij is to design the Thermal Hydrolysis Plant which will save the utility company millions of British pounds a year in electricity consumption and expenditure.
The Thermal Hydrolysis Process uses waste conversion technology to turn waste conditioned sludge into a bio-gas, which is then burned to produce electricity, creating energy from human waste and effluent.
Annemieke Nijhof, Group Director Water & Energy Grontmij N.V.: ‘I am pleased that we have won this assignment. It is a special project which shows the appreciation for the knowledge and skills of Grontmij, especially when it comes to our unique expertise, which we use in helping our clients pioneer some of the most innovative renewable energy technologies available.’
