The assignment, which was won after a successful tender procedure, will be executed in an association with Schuessler-Plan Ingenieurgesellschaft GmbH. Grontmij is responsible for the consulting services as well as for the structural design of the new terminal. The association will also oversee several planning services concerning the new terminal access road, including traffic planning and structural design.
Terminal 3 will complement the existing Terminals 1 and 2. It will serve both incoming and departing passengers and will have a gross floor area of approximately 196,000 sqm. It is a HUB terminal divided into three main parts: the terminal building itself, piers, and a PTS (Passenger Transport System) station. The terminal building includes the check-in hall, an adjacent area for safety and border controls, a market place, the arrival hall and areas for airport baggage systems and baggage claims.
The check-in hall with its base area of 155 x 82 meters is the architectural and structural highlight of the complex: an 18 meters high transparent façade and slender columns give the building a light appearance with the monumental roof panel seemingly levitating above the whole construction.
The traffic site development will be realized by means of a new to build access road connecting individual and public transport with the new terminal. An approximately 500 metres long bridge is included to give access to the check-in hall.
Ina Brandes, Country Managing Director Grontmij in Germany: ‘We are very proud of having won this demanding project, which will be completed by 2016. Terminal 3 is situated at the heart of Germany´s traffic networks and is of very high international relevance. With the new building we support our customer, Fraport AG, in effectively handling passenger capacities which will increase significantly in the next years.’
