4 Aug 2010 | Press release - Grontmij wins contract to renovate Copenhagen Nørreport Station

The state-owned railway enterprise Banedanmark (Rail Net Denmark) operating and developing the Danish state railway network has assigned Grontmij to assist in renovating the Nørreport Station in Copenhagen.

Grontmij is now assigned to 4 out of 5 projects of Nørreport Station, which has a total combined construction cost of € 80 million and combined fees for Grontmij of approximately € 6.7 million. The projects are scheduled to be executed during the period 2011-2014.

Projects Nørreport Station
Nørreport Station has underground rail tracks for regional trains, metro and S-trains and is the busiest rail traffic junction in Denmark. The renewal includes several large areas of the station and the main task is to carry out a major renovation of the concrete constructions. The tunnel construction is 400 meters long and 22 to 32 meters wide. In addition, the air quality on the underground regional tracks is to be improved, several technical installations are to be modernized to meet new norms and standards, and the public areas will receive a facelift. Grontmij won the preliminary design in an earlier stage and has now won the detailed design including supervision of the project.

Simultaneously with the renewal of the sub surface station a new urban space project for the above ground station area is being carried out. This project was won by Grontmij in cooperation with Public Architects and Cobe Architects and includes the relocation of passing streets and the traffic in order to form a public square connecting Nørreport Station with the medieval town centre of Copenhagen. All current station buildings above ground will be demolished and new will be built.

Søren Larsen, CEO of Grontmij Denmark: ‘As with the comprehensive renovation of Copenhagen Central Station a couple of years ago, we now once again have the opportunity to show our clients our expertise within modern hubs and urban spaces. Winning projects both above and below ground at Nørreport Station gives us a great advantage in terms of planning and coordinating tasks which we will turn into added value for our client.’

Ulf Palmblad, Group Director Transportation & Mobility at Grontmij: ‘We are proud to have been awarded the assignment. It shows that Grontmij is valued for its unique knowledge and innovative solutions in handling complex problems and challenging situations in the field of amongst others infrastructure.’
