The parties recently signed a joint venture agreement. This form of renewable energy is expected to be cheap and in the future could supply 30 to 50 percent of the Netherlands’ electricity requirements. Initial discussions are being held concerning possible study locations on the Wadden Islands of Texel and Terschelling.
Cheaper than coal power
Calculations have shown that in terms of cost price, electricity generated from ultra-deep geothermal energy can compete with electricity generated from coal. At this depth, the temperature is not only higher, but the conversion efficiency from heat to electricity is also far greater.
Advantages of geothermal energy
Geothermal energy is a clean power source which, unlike wind and solar energy, is available irrespective of wind or light conditions. The technology can be deployed on a large scale, and ties in with the trend for localised power generation. Deep geothermal energy can meet half of all the electricity demand in the Netherlands by the year 2050, making it an essential technology in the transition to sustainable energy generation.
Collaborative partners
In the joint venture, Grontmij will be concentrating on the design of the power station and the sale of heat of power. IF Technology and Well Engineering Partners (WEP), are specialists in geological survey work and drilling activities, while Bright Capital Partners will be responsible for financing the project.
