The parking was built in the 1960ies and covers an area of approximately 13,000 m². Its owner, Frankfurter Entsorgungs- und Service GmbH, is a local waste disposal company, which uses the underground garage for supporting an adjacent incineration plant. Therefore the ceiling must be able to withstand the weight of heavy-duty trucks delivering tons of waste.
During Grontmij´s first consulting job for the company in 2009, the Grontmij experts discovered massive damages in the existing concrete construction. For this reason, the owner has now decided to start a basic refurbishment to make the garage fit for future usage. The goal is to meet today’s safety standards. This requires structural adaptations, new fire protection measures and modernised building technologies. All refurbishment measures must be taken under ongoing operation.
Ina Brandes, country managing director Grontmij in Germany, explains: ‘This refurbishment project is an excellent example for an increasing trend in the building sector: owners tend to refurbish their properties rather than build new buildings. This saves costs and will therefore be the silver bullet for the coming years. With a year-long expertise in refurbishment planning, Grontmij in Germany is well-prepared for this shifting demand from the market.’
