4 Nov 2010 | Press release - Grontmij appointed to major projects worldwide

Grontmij has been awarded several major contracts in China, Tanzania, Mongolia and Turkey. The assignments oversee works in all Grontmij’s three Business Lines: Planning & Design, Transportation & Mobility and Water & Energy.

China
Grontmij has been appointed a € 1.5 million assignment by the Chinese city of Wuhan over a 4 month period. The project consists of the design of an office building, laboratories and congress centre. The total fee for the design project is over € 2 million and will be carried out in close cooperation with the Shanghai Xian Dai design institute. The investment cost of the total project is estimated at almost € 65 million (600 million RMB).

The assignment of Grontmij follows on the international design competition won in June to become lead designer for the Wuhan New Energy Centre, a research institute in the field of new energy sources and sustainability. On completion the innovative building, Wuhan Energy Flower, is expected to meet the BREEAM bespoke ‘Outstanding’ accreditation in the BRE’s International classification and as such will be one of the most sustainable office buildings in the world.

Tanzania
In Tanzania, Grontmij has been appointed by the Millennium Challenge Corporation, a US Government aid agency, to oversee the project management for the Tanzanian Transportation sector. The works consist of -amongst others- helping the client in managing and implementing the upgrading of several mainland and rural roads, enhancing road maintenance facilities and to provide on-site oversight. The fee for Grontmij is € 3.75 million ($ 5.2 million) over three years and equals the total contract amount.

Mongolia
Grontmij was also appointed project management and supervision consultant by the Millennium Challenge Corporation to manage and coordinate several projects within the transportation sector in Mongolia. These works include amongst others: the design and construction of a new 260 meter bridge over the Tuul River and upgrading 176 km of the 500 km north-south Mongolian highway between the capital of Ulaanbaatar and the Chinese border. The fee for Grontmij is € 2.6 million ($ 3.6 million) over a 38 month period. The total contract amount is € 4.2 million ($ 5.9 million).

Turkey
In Turkey Grontmij has been appointed as the consultant by NL Agency International to improve the energy efficiency and the operational conditions of the Nigde Wastewater treatment plant. Within the scope of the project, also training on the operation and maintenance of the hardware will be provided to local staff, as well as transfer of knowledge to the Turkish waste water treatment sector. The project is expected to start in January 2011 and will have duration of 15 months. The fee for Grontmij is close to € 600,000. The project will be jointly carried out by Grontmij’s Turkish and Dutch engineers.

Sylvo Thijsen, CEO Grontmij: ‘These are very exciting projects and a further testament of the success of our new organisational structure, which focuses on leveraging knowledge, references, skills and expertise from our local markets to ensure cross border corporation within our company. These assignments underline the fact that our new structure enables us to meet the requests and demands of our clients and to service them even better.’
