15 Sep 2010 | Press release - Grontmij to assist Stockholm with major project in infrastructure

Grontmij is requested by the city of Stockholm to lead the design management for the planned redevelopment of the ‘Slussen’ district in the city centre. The development of Slussen in Stockholm is one of Sweden's  largest projects in the infrastructure, with an estimated value of € 300 million. The total fee for Grontmij-Hifab-Projektlots consortium is € 1.25 million over a period of one and a half year. The contracting party is the ‘Exploateringskontor’ of the city of Stockholm. Construction work is expected to start in 2012.

Grontmij will be operating in a consortium with Hifab-Projektlots. The assignment for the consortium involves one of the most complex projects currently being undertaken in the city of Stockholm. The project covers the majority of technical disciplines including architecture, installation, metropolitan analysis, civil engineering, geotechnology, vibrations, risk assessment, landscaping, traffic, fire and risk/safety and noise nuisance. The project will be undertaken in the heart of the city of Stockholm, while underground, train, bus, car, boat, pedestrian and bicycle traffic will continue, uninterrupted.

Slussen is a well-known spot located between the Gamla stan (the old city) and the Södermalm in Stockholm. Over the years, Slussen has become the traffic hub between the islands on which the city of Stockholm is built. The Slussen area has been of key importance to all forms of trade and communication since the founding of Stockholm. The buildings that make up Slussen are due for renewal. A great deal will have to be demolished and replaced by new buildings, taking into account the requirements of a modern and bustling city life. The new-build projects include bridges, tunnels, a bus terminal, streets, city squares, commercial real estate and public buildings.

Leif Bertilsson, CEO of Grontmij Sweden: ‘We are particularly proud to have been awarded this assignment. The Grontmij-Hifab-Projektlots consortium can rely on broad-based and in-depth knowledge of projects of this kind in general, and in Slussen in particular. We have years of experience with and knowledge of the existing structure in Slussen, and the functions and status of the area as they have has changed over time.’

Ulf Palmblad, Group Director Transportation & Mobility Grontmij: ‘We are very pleased to be appointed to this exciting project, that shows Grontmij is valued for its leading competences where it comes to our unique knowledge and expertise in transportation and mobility.
