Shared Space Scheme in Ashford
Integrated streets and equal priority for all road users
Grontmij was the lead designer on the multi-award winning Ashford shared space scheme.
This pioneering initiative has transformed Ashford town centre by converting a third of the ring road into a series of integrated streets and creating an environment where pedestrians and road users have equal priority.
Sustainable aspects of the Shared Space Scheme
The scheme is a synthesis of engineering, art and the environment. Sustainable aspects of the scheme include:
- Sustainable Drainage System integrated into rain gardens
- Movement strategy minimises reliance on the private car and promotes alternative methods of transport such as walking, cycling and public transport
- Shared road space gives priority to pedestrians
