Rehabilitating wetlands Scheldt river

Rehabilitation of wetlands, Belgium

Scheldt River, Antwerp

The Scheldt River in Antwerp was a former wetlands which then became a dry, sandy area due to the environmental impact of the new city ring road.

Grontmij was appointed by THV SAM, to develop tidal prevention and flood protection solutions as well as to develop natural and recreational areas.

Grontmij created an integrated and sustainable green lung which includes water ponds and walking and biking trails.   The area has truly been rehabilitated in a wetland area through reconnecting rivers with fish passages.   The result is a reduction in flooding risk and enhanced mudflat fauna and flora.
