Growing bulbs sustainably
Bollenmeer, the Netherlands
Within the Bollenmeer bulb growing region of the Netherlands, Grontmij, working with Wageningen University, was tasked with achieving a 25% reduction in emissions by 2010.
The research focused on the design and application of the water management strategies, taking into account territorial restrictions (salt objections, soil structure, etc.) and on optimising the cultivation and hydrological conditions, with special attention to water quality, quantity, pathways and plant responses.
These aspects are examined at the Oostwaard Farm which is equipped with test plots for growing bulbs in sand. On the different test plots and facilities are different forms of water management processes which, on a practical scale, are regularly tested by conducting experiments, measuring programs and undertaking additional modelling.
