This section of our report shows our performance against our chosen environmental indicators for our GRI compliance.
Environmental Performance 2009
We have selected a wide range of environmental standards against which we report our performance. In 2008, we reported against GRI indicators for the first time. Now with a second set of data in a wider range of indicators, we will set 2009 as the base year for performance measurement against a set of binding targets for our operations starting in 2010. Our chosen indicators are:
- EN3 - Direct Energy Consumption by primary source
- EN4 - Indirect energy consumption by primary source.
- EN8 - Total water withdrawal by source
- EN16 - Total direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions by weight
- EN22 - Total weight of waste by type and disposal method.
- EN28 - Fines and sanctions for non-compliance with environmental laws and regulations
- EN29 - Significant environmental impacts of transportation
Stakeholder engagement
Throughout 2009, our engagement with both internal and external stakeholders led us to embed our CSR reporting into our business processes and values. To this end we are in the process of enhancing our ISO 14001 accredited management systems to cover our environmental reporting mechanisms.
Outlook
During 2010, we will publish targets on our website for our environmental performance management in the key indicators of energy and transport use, waste generation and our carbon footprint. In addition, it is our stated ambition to become carbon neutral during 2013 and we will begin the process of putting management systems in place to work towards this goal. In 2010, we will further extend our environmental reporting by becoming signatories to the carbon disclosure project, the international benchmark for reporting greenhouse gas emission inventories. www.cdproject.net.
In 2010, we will report on the following additional GRI indicators to give transparency to our approach and performance in managing our own environmental footprint and that of our clients through our project work.
- EN5 - Energy saved due to conservation and efficiency improvements.
- EN18 - Initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reductions achieved.
- EN26 - Initiatives to mitigate environmental impacts of products and services, and extent of impact mitigation.
