Our use of both direct and indirect energy in our operations is recorded under GRI indicators EN3 and EN4.
 
Energy use in 2009

Direct energy
Our use of direct energy across all of our operations (which is restricted to the burning of natural gas for office heating) amounted to 39,326 Gj which represents a usage of 5.6 Gj per head for our full time equivalent staff.



Indirect energy
Our use of indirect energy across all of our operations (which is restricted to the use of electricity and district heating) amounted to 59,457 Gj which represents a usage of 8.5 Gj per head for our full time equivalent staff.

Energy management
We recognise the dominance of energy as an essential resource and one that is of central importance in the mitigation of the pressures of climate change.  In this respect we mange all of our energy in a responsible manner and minimise its use to levels that are as low as is reasonably practicable.

In 2010 we will publish targets for energy reduction across our operations in plans linked to an overall reduction in our carbon footprint.

Reporting
We also report our energy use under scopes 1&2 of the greenhouse gas protocols to the Carbon Disclosure Project. In 2008 we reported only for our UK and Ireland operations, for 2009 we will report for the whole of Grontmij N.V.
