The effects on the environment due to our use of transport in our operations is recorded under GRI indicator EN29.
Transport in 2009
Grontmij overall has a modest impact on the environment due to the office base of our operations and our low usage of raw materials. However, it is in our use of transport where we have the largest impact. For our reporting against this indicator we have collected data relating to staff travelling in-work for internal and client related activities by road, rail, and air.
Our overall travel was as follows:
| |
Total km (x 1,000) |
Per head km |
| Car |
49,658 |
7,100 |
| Rail |
3,091 |
440 |
| Air |
15,942 |
2,280 |
Car use is our dominant mode of travel as our offices tend to be centred in (relatively) close proximity to our client operations and hence our project sites. The use of air travel is generally confined to international flights, either between or regional centres or for overseas project operations. Rail travel is our favoured transport mode for long distance in-country travel.
Travel management
We recognise the dominance of transport in our overall environmental footprint. Its environmental effects and consequences, especially regarding air travel and its impacts on climate change are evident. In this respect we manage all of our travel in a responsible manner and minimise its use to levels that are as low as is reasonably practicable.
In 2010 we will publish targets for energy reduction across our operations in plans linked to an overall reduction in our carbon footprint.
ReportingWe also report our transport use under scopes 3 of the greenhouse gas protocols to the Carbon Disclosure Project. In 2008 we reported only for our UK and Ireland operations, for 2009 we will report for the whole of Grontmij N.V.
