Sustainability by design
As an international group of multi-disciplinary engineers and environmental consultants, Grontmij is committed to the concept of sustainability as a means of protecting and caring for the environment.

Whereas our direct environmental footprint is modest, our indirect impact on the environment through our project work is many times larger in terms of the energy and materials that we incorporate in our designs. In order to minimise this indirect footprint we have adopted the principle of 'sustainability by design'. This in-house approach, ensures that in each job we undertake our clients can be rely on our skills and process to deliver the most sustainable outcome for their needs.

This is guided by five core principles:

• reducing whole life costs of projects
• minimising all risks to the environment and our societies
• doing more than expected and making a difference through innovation
• leading our industries and clients into new areas of sustainability 
• engaging with others to raise awareness and promote sustainability

Our approach to sustainability is embedded within the core principles of our business. Our aim is to play a leading role in the delivery of sustainable environments both now and in the future. Operationally, we actively manage all of our projects with the aim of maximising the impact of that project on a wide set of sustainability indicators. Our primary focus in this regard is to address climate change through strategies for both mitigation and adaptation. This is the essence of “Sustainability by Design”.

Focus on safety
We attached great importance to delivering all of our project safely. It is a key and fundamental part of our corporate culture that we plan, act and deliver all that we do in safe manner. To this end, in Denmark, Germany and the UK we have health and safety management systems in place that are accredited to OHSAS 18001. During 2010 we will continue to roll out our health and safety strategy to include Belgium, Netherlands and Sweden in this accreditation.  

Stakeholder engagement
Throughout 2009, our engagement with both internal and external stakeholders led us to believe that we have selected the correct indicators in this area and that sustainability by design is a key differentiator between us and our competitors.
