SHARON to be implemented for waste water treatment

‘Tekniska Verken’ is to implement SHARON in the waste water treatment plant in the city of Linköping. SHARON

SHARON is developed and patented by Grontmij and has reached international success as a more efficient and environmentally friendly way to remove nitrogen from wastewater.

`We chose to go with SHARON because it is a promising technology from the energy and cost perspective, and at the same time Grontmij is able to meet our requirements on schedule, "said Magnus Arnell, Process & Environmental Manager at ‘Tekniska Verken’

Most of Linköping city’s waste water goes to the waste water treatment plant of Nykvarn. There they purify nearly 16 million cubic meters of wastewater every year. Sewage sludge is separated in the purification process, which is digested to become biogas. SHARON is used to remove nitrogen compounds in the residual sludge water.

International success
SHARON was originally developed by Grontmij in the Netherlands, where since the 1990s there are extremely high demands on the purification of waste water that reaches the Dutch coastline. The method has since been used internationally, including in the UK and the U.S., where the biggest holding right now is being built in New York. Since the method is more efficient than similar processes significant energy savings of up to 25 percent can be achieved.

“We look forward to working with SHARON on the first installation in Sweden. We hope that it will open up opportunities to implement the process in more waste water treatment plants in the country with the needs of high-performance nitrogen removal with a stable and simple operation", says Ola Rosen, project developer at Grontmij Sweden.
