Survey on large-scale leisure projects

Strategic development in leisure and tourism

The Flemish Government in Belgium is preparing a revision of the strategic development plan for Flanders. In view of this, several research projects have been initiated. Grontmij is conducting a survey of recent developments in leisure and tourism in Belgium as well as in other parts of the world.

The focus is on large scale multifunctional leisure projects. We identify representative developments as well as relevant projects which we expect to be feasible in Flanders within the coming years.

The survey looks into different clusters of leisure activities such as multipurpose sport centres in combination with shopping malls, major indoor entertainment facilities, wellness centres, exhibition centres, giant screen theatres, theme parks and amusement parks in combination with conference and hotel facilities.

The analysis of the developments in the leisure and tourism market and the programme of demands are the basis to identify the location criteria for these projects and to set up planning policy guidelines which could be included in the revision of the statutory spatial plan for Flanders. This plan is the strategic framework for regional and urban development.
