A highly efficient gas-fired plant in Sweden
Remodeling and restoration of a plant which is more than 50 years old
E.ON Sweden is investing in a total remodeling and restoration of the more than 50-year-old Öresundsverket. The new Oresund Plant will be a highly efficient, ecofriendly, natural gas-fired CHP (Combined heat and power) plant with a production capacity of 440 MW and 250 MW heat.
The aim of project Öresundsverket is to increase electricity production and to enhance the reliability of electricity supply. The plant’s electricity production will replace older coal-based electricity production in the energy system in northern Europe, thereby reducing global emissions of carbon dioxide by one million tons per year. Öresundsverket will also supply about 1 TWh of heat per year to Malmö’s district heating network
Grontmij has been involved already in the initial phase of the project by studying different technical solutions and provided major input during the specification of the plant. The enquiry was sent out in October 2005.
An important milestone was reached when the project received environmental permits in May 2006. A turnkey contract was signed in August 2006 with a consortium of Hitachi Power Europe and General Electric.
The gas turbine, one of the world’s largest, was lifted into place in the plant in September 2007 followed by a number of large components during late 2007 and early 2008. The first firing of the gas turbine will occur at the end of 2008 and commercial operation will start in the middle of 2009.
Grontmij in Malmö has during a long period worked close with E.ON in developing new energy production solutions and new and rebuilts of plants. In this large project Grontmij contributes with skilled technical consultants and project management.
