Grassy field where before the Akzo Nobel's MA CC plant stood

From a fully operational factory to a grassy field

Decommissioning of Akzo Nobel’s MA/CC plant in Delfzijl

From a fully operational factory to a grassy field: Akzo Nobel’s MA/CC (methylamines and choline chlorides) plant in Delfzijl was taken down at a lightning pace. Grontmij was involved in the project from beginning to end, from shut-down to the delivery of a site that was once again ready for building.

Health, Safety and the Environment

Grontmij drew up the action plan for the demolition and sale and also took on the project management.  Together with a safety expert, we also supplied the Health, Safety and Environment plan. We inspected the demolition site for contamination using radar measurements. These revealed that there were pipes under the factory that other companies were using. These pipes were diverted. After demolition, the soil was again inspected. No contamination was found. The entire process was conducted safely and in full compliance with environmental regulations.

Sale of parts
The plant consisted of three sub-factories. Two of those could be sold in their entirety. Insofar as it was possible, parts from the third factory were disassembled, cleaned and sold to the highest bidder. Thanks to the excellent contact with Akzo Nobel’s plant managers and the companies in Delfzijl, Grontmij managed to find buyers for the plant’s parts throughout Europe.  “We made Akzo Nobel a lot of money with this last effort.” A most successful project in every respect.
