Largest geothermic power station in Germany

Enough power to supply 26,000 inhabitants

The public services of Munich is building on a new site the largest geothermic power station in Germany with 8 megawatt power and up to 7 megawatt heat supply.

In order to be able to generate electrical power it is necessary to drill down to stratums that bear thermal water, which in this case has over 140° C – up to 4,200 meters deep.

The energy department of Grontmij AEW Plan does the general planning of this power station. Its work starts at the point where the thermal water appears at the drill hole (120 litres/second) and comprises all the mechanical and electrical engineering as well as the control system and the construction technique.

Compared to heat supply with fuel oil and power generation with the average German mix of energy sources the new plant saves approx. 30,000 tons of carbon dioxide emission per year. Therefore, this technology is a valuable sustainable innovation in the energy sector.
