Grontmij involved in latest developments in wind energy
The most important advantage of wind energy by far is the reduction in the use of fossil fuels. Climate change and energy independency are reasons for an energy transition. In the past, wind mills converted wind energy directly into mechanical labour. Nowadays, ‘wind energy’ refers mainly to electrical energy that is generated by means of a wind turbine.
As an agency that attaches a great deal of importance to the climate, Grontmij is involved in the latest developments, such as recent offshore wind farms in the Dutch North Sea.
Environmental Impact Assessment studies (EIA)
Grontmij is involved in a wide variety of wind energy projects, both onshore and offshore. In 2002 on behalf of NUON and Shell Wind Energy, Grontmij drew up the EIA for the first offshore wind farm in Dutch territiorial waters (the 108 MW Offshore Wind Farm Egmond aan Zee). Since then Grontmij has almost been continously involved delivering management support services and multi-disciplinairy projects such as EIA’s and Permit Requests for offshore wind farms for energy companies.
In 2008 Grontmij drew up the permit requests and EIA’s for two offshore wind farms, Q10 and Callantsoog-Noord (303 MW), for which in 2009 exclusivity has been granted to the Dutch utility Eneco by the Dutch government.
