Telemetry systems for better business information

Replacement and Integration of telemetry systems (TeRI) 

Grontmij has been working closely with Severn Trent Water since 2004 to replace the utility’s 16 year old plant management and control system telemetry system. Our involvement has covered all parts of the project:

• Vendor selection
• Vendor contract management
• Development of asset management standards
• Development of new processes and procedures to be used with the new system
• System configuration
• Data migration

This project is for the replacement of the existing Severn Trent Water regional telemetry system with an eSCADA system and the provision of new interfaces between eSCADA and the company business information systems. eSCADA is part of an overall programme.

Grontmij was appointed to assist with the procurement of the new telemetry system, the development of user requirements and the business processes associated with the operation of the new system and its interface to other business data systems. In addition Grontmij has carried out a key role in the development of data standards and the migration of data and displays from the existing system to the new system.

Work also includes an operational risk assessment for 5,000 distribution and treatment sites, and the development of site automation and control. The business aspects of the project have included the financial appraisal of the potential suppliers’ competing tenders for the telemetry system replacement. This followed the development of the procurement strategy, based on best value, taking into account pricing, technical solutions and added value over the system lifecycle. Grontmij’s involvement also included advising on contract conditions for the supply, installation, support and maintenance of the new system.
