Grontmij Belgium wins award 'Public Spaces 2009'

Grontmij in Belgium has won the award ‘Public Spaces 2009’ for the redesigning of the layout of the town centre of Machelen, a potential growth area for recreation.

Isolated elements connected with each other in the public space
In consultation with the municipality, Grontmij took care of the preliminary research, the design and the contracting-out of the works for redesigning. Integration is the main theme of the design, which covers the main street, adjoining streets, a square and an arm of the river ‘de Leie’ which is closed of.

Other isolated elements such as the Raveelmuseum, the walking path along the river ‘de Leie’, the church and a square are now connected with each other. Grontmij realized this by means of redesigning the public space such as reorganising parking spaces and the integrating of the bicycle- and walking paths.

Award is recognition for the design
The award is presented yearly at the trade fair ‘Day of Public Spaces’. Professionals in the development, design, maintenance and management of the public space are invited. The Flemish minister Hilde Crevits presented the award during the final day of the trade fair to the mayor of Machelen of the municipality of Zulte. Grontmij sees this award as an important recognition for its design.
